Yes! Attending Reunion

Since I will not be attending this reunion, I am posting some info to the group: some repeated from last reunion and current updated info.

In 2003, the organization I had been an integral part of for 33 years, which had been acquired by a New York firm 2 years earlier, decided to “early retire” all senior managers in my department. With the blessings of my family, I began a series of extended hiking trips to some of the most scenic spots around the world. Upon my return from a South American hike in 2004, I found my wife, Sandy, gravely ill, and I instantly became a 24 hour 'round the clock caretaker for the next 5 years, whenever she wasn't hospitalized or in a nursing home. In 2009, with my daughter and grandchildren at my side, we acceeded to my wife, partner, and best friend for 40 years' wishes, and removed her from life support. Since then I have devoted most of my time and energy to working with a national cardiac patient support group and cardiac surgery patients at Sherman Hospital in Elgin and Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Most of my hobbies have faded into the background excepting for photography (Thank you Mr. Benton for getting me started) and woodworking; and since 2005 I've learned to become a proficient gourmet cook and baker (Thank you Sandy and all the chefs and ladies who trained her). Since 2016, when I was hospitalized at Christmastime with cardiac heart and kidney acute failure, and a severe round of shingles in Feb & March of this year, I’ve lost 45 lbs, just shed 5 months wearing a life vest (external defibrulator), and am getting back to driving (went for 6 month without) walking several miles each week.

My daughter is currently training dogs and their owners nutrition, therapy skills, and other skills invaluable to dog owners, in Lake Bluff. My grandson is finishing up his BA at DePaul U. My granddaughter is in summer camp. My brother, Kent, who some of you might remember, just retired from his psychiatry practice in Florida.

Have a great reunion.

2018 Update. My brother, Kent, and his wife, Diana retired from their Florida practices in the fall and moved to Chicago to be closer to the families. Over the holidays we had a nice reunion with them and my nephews and their families/significant others, who are in business together and living adjacent to each other in Marina Towers. Heather's out of commission for a few weeks after surgery and hoping to get back to work in early February. It seems a number of her clients picked up dogs from their breeders over the holidays and specifically want her do do their training - so it should be an interesting spring. I'm back to training visitors to cardiac patients in the local hospital and trying to get back out and about with local documentary and nature photography. Wishing you all a happy new year.

Ralph - I was really touched by your thoughtful rememberances of Henri. Thank you. He was a complex guy and a friend to so many. I had a lunch with him and a couple of our other buddies about 3 years ago in was the first time I had seen him in at least 30 years. I mentioned to him that I best remembered him. admiringly, in a piano recital he and I and Joy Klinkman were in, and mentioned the pieces we played. Henri's sharp mind corrected me immediately on the piece he played and we all had a good laugh at the past. Requiescat in pacem.

Hi Bill - I hope you've had a great summer and are looking forward to another birthday.

hey Pam - Happy Birthday. Remember those long hot summer days when the bunch of us would grab our beach towels and take over the far end of the pier on the LB beach, soaking up the sun and keeping up on the latest gossip? Great times I remember.

I met Jane in High School & immediately knew she was a vixen, which was a loveable feature in her case. Although I haven't kept in touch with most of my classmates, I did periodically touch bases with Jane and always tried to hear her take on what was going on whenever I went to the luncheons. I'll truly miss her wry smile and infectuous laughter.

As usual I'm a day behind in wishing you a happy birthday. Are you planning to head back north during the summer? I still can't drive, but maybe by then I can.

Happy upcoming birthday, Bill! At age 70 I think one can safely say that they have developed a historical perspective which helps focus on the really important things in life. Anchors aweigh!
